Mikkel Borg Bjergsø got introduced to craft beer as a student when he started working at a café. Mikkel and some of his friends started a club where they discussed and tasted beer, after trying an IPA from Danish Brøckhouse Mikkel got the idea of brewing his own beer to let the others taste. The beer that he brewed with his childhood friend, Kristian Klarup Keller was a success. It even won a blind test, which got the two friends to start hobby brewing more serious. They began attending Danish beer festivals where they won numerous awards for their homebrews. It was about where it all began for real. In 2006 they had their big breakthrough with the successful beer “Beer Geek Breakfast” at Coopenhagen Beer Festival. After that they started to brew bigger volumes in established breweries by paying rent.
Today Mikkeller is driven only by Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, and has become one of the best known and prized gypsy breweries in the world. Many of the beers belong to the highest ranked in the world in their respective style. In recent years Mikkeller has scooped numerous gold medals for its beers at festivals as Stockholm Beer & Whisky Festival. Mikkeller has among other things been named “The Godfather of Gypsy Brewing” by the newspaper BeerAdvocate.
