Mikkeller was founded by Mikkel Borg Bjergsø who started to brew beer brewed with his childhood friend, Kristian Klarup Keller. In 2006 they had their big breakthrough with the successful beer “Beer Geek Breakfast” at Coopenhagen Beer Festival. After that they started to brew bigger volumes in established breweries by paying rent. Four years later the first Mikkeller Bar opened at Viktoriagade in Copenhagen.

Today Mikkeller is driven only by Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, and has become one of the best known and prized gypsy breweries in the world. Many of the beers belong to the highest ranked in the world in their respective style. In recent years Mikkeller has scooped numerous gold medals for its beers at festivals as Stockholm Beer & Whisky Festival. Mikkeller has among other things been named “The Godfather of Gypsy Brewing” by the newspaper BeerAdvocate.
